The Story About Sergio

The young man was shy but he asked questions anyway. He didn't understand much of this new continent, the people, the clothes, the shopping. All he wanted to do was rent a movie for himself and his parents. He was a strong young man in a leather jacket thick black hair and a thick accent that screamed to be misunderstood.

"I would like to take these films," he told the girl at the register and handed her the movies he had found.

"Can I see your rental card," the girl chirped. She was friendly and blonde and smiled broadly.

"I have no rental card," he said.

"Pardon me?" she smiled.

He looked confused, trying to search for the words. "No, no card," he said.

"Oh okay, can I see your driver's licence then?"

"Driver's licence? Yes, I have this," he said and began digging around in his wallet. He pulled out his licence and handed it to her.

"You do have an account here right?" she said.

"I do not understand."

"Have you been here before?"

"No, I just want to take these films home for my parents."

"Well you have to have an account before you can rent," she said. "Do you have a credit card?"

"No, this I do not have."

"Do you have a second piece of ID with your address on it?"

"No, this is my licence," he said. He was looking more and more confused.

"I'm sorry but you need a second piece of ID to make an account."

"I don't understand," he said and showed her his licence again. "Here, take this."

"I'm sorry, but I can't rent anything without a second piece of ID or credit card."

"I don't understand. I just want these films for tonight, I bring them back tomorrow."

The conversation went back and forth for a while longer, the girl continued to smile and chirp away about company policy and the young man just became more confused and embarassed. He stormed out of the store red faced, not because he was angry but because he didn't understand and was embarassed.

The girl turned to her co-worker and told him how bad she felt but that she didn't want to get in trouble. Her co-worker just shrugged and went back to what he was doing. They heard tires screech outside but thought nothing of it.

A city bus hit its brakes a split second too late and slammed into our foreign friend, killing him instantly. This all occured outside the front window of the movie store and the employees never realized what had occured in plain view behind their backs until they heard the ambulance sirens and few minutes later.
